The Haywood County Solid Waste Department will be holding a spring Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event on Sunday, May 26th from 9am until 4pm at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) located at 278 Recycle Rd, Clyde.

During this event, Haywood County residents are encouraged to drop off these household pollutants free of charge. Haywood County has partnered with EcoFLo who will have representatives on hand to collect the following non pesticide items:

Aerosols
Latex paint in cans
Mixed solvents
Propane tanks (grill and camp size only please)
Metallic Mercury
Mercury debris
Alkaline cleaners
Acid cleaners
Paint related materials
Fire extinguishers
Small cylinders

Items that are regularly collected at the Material Recovery Center can also be brought to this event.  They include:

Lead acid batteries
Alkaline batteries
NiCad batteries
Lithium batteries
Fluorescent bulbs (tubes and compacts)

There will be another collection day on May 9th at the NC Extension office located on Raccoon Road Waynesville to accept only pesticides.

Medications and pharmaceutical can be disposed of at year around collection sites located at each of the Police Departments and Sheriff’s Office.

“This event is a great and free way to dispose of these materials’” stated Haywood County Recycling Coordinator, Zondra Kuykendall.  “If you have an item and are unsure if EcoFlo can accept it, please call our office at (828) 356-2138 before the event so we can verify”, she continued. “If they don’t collect the material, maybe we can help find a solution.”

This event is only for Haywood County residents. Please don’t bring or drop-off items prior to the event. Early drop-offs could incur fees and fines.

For additional information on the event, contact Zondra Kuykendall at (828) 356-2138 or email Zondra.Kuykendall@haywoodcountync.gov.
