Board Composition
The Town of Maggie Valley Board of Aldermen consists of five members, including a directly elected Mayor. The Board of Aldermen typically meet twice a month. Their monthly agenda setting and work session meeting is normally held on the first Tuesday of each month at 9:30am in the Town Hall Board Room. The second meeting is their regularly scheduled monthly meeting and includes a public comment period. This meeting is usually held on the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm in the Town Hall Board Room. These meetings are open to the public and residents are encouraged to attend. Elections are held in odd years, with two Aldermen elected to four (4) year terms in one cycle, while the Mayor and the other two Aldermen are elected in the next cycle. All seats are considered at large (no district representation) and non-partisan. Persons interested in running for a seat on the Board of Aldermen should consult the Haywood County Board of Elections for eligibility and filing information.

Mike Eveland is serving his second term as Mayor and has served two terms as Alderman. Mike has spent his entire professional career working within the restaurant and hospitality industry serving 7-Eleven, Ryan’s Steakhouse and Fatz Café in senior management roles. He has utilized his thirty-three years of management experience as the General Manager of Maggie Valley Inn and Conference Center’s Rendezvous Restaurant.
Mike is a Disabled American Veteran of the United States Navy, serving between 1977 and 1979. His involvement in the community includes being the past President of the Smoky Mountain Chapter of the Harley Owners Group (HOG) from 2011-2014 and he has been the Finance Chairman of the Haywood County Tourism Development Authority.

Phillip Wight is currently serving his fifth term as an Alderman. He has served as Mayor Pro Tem as well. Phillip is an HVAC Contractor who began working in the Heating and Air Conditioning industry at the age of 14, working alongside his grandfather who owned Coker Heating & Cooling.
Additionally, along with his wife, Phillip owns a small motel where they live with their daughter. Prior to being elected Alderman in 2011, Phillip was a member of the Town of Maggie Valley Zoning Board of Adjustment and President of the Maggie Valley Area Lodging Association.

Jim Owens is serving his first term as Alderman. He is also Mayor Pro Tem. Jim recently retired from The Biltmore Company after fourteen years of service. He directed five separate business units and was responsible for 750 employees.
His background is extensive with over 45 years of experience in leisure destination management and development. He has worked for Sea World of Florida and Sea World of California and Sea World’s parent company, Harcourt, Brace and Jovanovich.
He also worked for 13 years as President, CEO of SRI Enterprises, an import company. He has managed his own tourism consulting firm with clients that included major theme parks, international resorts and regional attractions.
His involvement in the community includes serving on the Advisory Boards of the Salvation Army and Richie’s Alliance for Autism. Jim has also been appointed to serve as Maggie Valley’s Liaison on the Haywood County Tourism Development Authority (HCTDA) Board.

John Hinton is serving his first term as Alderman. This is his first time serving in public office. He has over 40 years of leadership experience in the transportation and distribution industry with Collins & Aikman Corporation and Harris Teeter. Additionally, he has over 20 years of Board Governance experience serving on the Boards of the National Private Truck Council and the North Carolina Trucking Association.
John has lived in Maggie Valley since 2011 and is a member and a Board member of Maggie Valley United Methodist Church. He is also the leader of the Risk Taking Mission and Service team.
John is a member of the Waynesville Elks Club Lodge #1769. He retired in 2017 and will be a full time Alderman for the Town of Maggie Valley.

Tim Wise is currently serving his first term as Alderman. He retired following 31 years of
teaching from Tuscola High School where he was the Director of Bands since 1993. Prior to his
tenure at Tuscola, Tim was the Assistant Director of Bands at Riverdale High School in
Riverdale, Georgia. He graduated with a Bachelors of Music Education degree from Morehead
State University in Morehead, Kentucky in 1991 and from Western Carolina University with a
Master of Arts in Education in 2003.
Tim was twice named by School Band and Orchestra magazine as the North Carolina
representative in their “50 Directors that Make a Difference” and was also recognized on WLOS’
“Thanks to Teachers”. He is past president of the Western North Carolina Band Master’s
Association as well as Award of Excellence winner. Tim was the NC chairman of the state
marching band committee on two separate occasions.
Tim lives with his wife Fritzie, a retired Haywood County music teacher of 29 years, in
Maggie Valley, NC.
