Since July 2016, Maggie Valley residents have been asking when are the new recycling containers going to arrive? The Town of Maggie Valley is excited to announce that the containers arrived on April 25. Our Public Works Department has been diligently working on assembling the containers to prepare for their delivery and distribution.
Click here for tips and more information concerning our Curbside Recycling. The following instructions will guide you through this recycling program transition that concludes on Tuesday August 1 2017.
- Beginning on Monday May 22, residential customers may come to Town Hall to pick up their new blue curbside recycling containers. These containers are 64 gallons in size and are smaller than your existing 96-gallon brown trash containers. The new recycling containers should fit in most midsize and large SUVs as well as all pick-up trucks. Once you have your new blue recycling container feel free to start using it immediately. Remember the purpose of the new containers is to eliminate the use of “blue bags” in our recycling process to promote both environmental and economic efficiencies. Just place any recyclable item directly into the container without lining it with any bags.
- For those of you who cannot pick up your new recycling container in person at Town Hall due to time constraints or vehicle limitations the Town’s Public Works Department will hand deliver a container directly to your home. Once you have your new blue recycling container feel free to start using it immediately. Remember the purpose of the new containers is to eliminate the use of “blue bags” in our recycling process to promote both environmental and economic efficiencies. Just place any recyclable item directly into the container without lining it with any bags. We anticipate this delivery option to be the most popular with our residents so please be patient as it will take several weeks of delivery routes to make sure everyone who needs a container, has a container.
- Since the announcement was made about the Town’s new curbside recycling program featuring container based recycling collection, some residents expressed concerns about not wanting to be issued our standard 64-gallon blue container because of its large size. These concerns are completely reasonable but the Town does not want you to stop recycling. If you do not wish to receive a blue container, please contact Town Hall directly by phone 828.926.0866 or by email firstname.lastname@example.org. Instead of recycling using the Town issued container, you can use your own smaller container. Just place your personal container at the curb with all of your loose comingled recyclables in it—do not place these recyclables in any type of bag or they will not be collected. Recyclables placed inside of your Town issued “brown container” will also not be collected.
Transitioning from Blue Bag Recycling to Container Based Recycling is a major change. It will take everyone a while to get used to the news collection method. During this transition period which is defined from May 22- July 25 continue to recycle regardless of recycling method and CWS will continue to pick up your recyclables on Tuesdays. However, beginning on Tuesday August 1, 2017 the Town of Maggie Valley will officially begin container based recycling—blue bag recycling will be no longer be accepted from this point moving forward.
The Town of Maggie Valley Staff is here to make this recycling transition as smooth as possible. If you have additional questions regarding our new Container Based Curbside Recycling Program just let us know, we are here to help.
